Which Nursery Should I Choose For My Child?

This is one of the most popular questions that we get here at CMT.

As parents, we ultimately all want to do the best for our children. We want the best for them. We want them to have the best childhood experience. None of us are perfect and there are days that don’t go as well as others but we all really do try our best!

Parents don’t like my answer to this question.

My answer is very simple.

And some parents spend thousands of pounds of very expensive Educational Consultants to map out education plans and have everything set up for their precious little ones.

First of all, let me say that I firmly believe that the work of most Educational Consultants is highly unethical and immoral. Not all of them - I know a few who are exceptional. But they are the exception to this.

The reason I say this is because I know the intricacies of nurseries and Pre-Schools very well. I worked in them for many years myself as a young, qualified teacher. And I also experienced nurseries for my own child.

Both times, I was very disappointed.

Now, if you’ve had an amazing experience with your child’s nursery then you are the exception too. And good for you. And I’m delighted for your child if that is the case.

When it comes to choosing the ‘best’ nursery for your child, you truly do not need to spend thousands of pounds paying someone else to tell you which is better and which is worse. Truly. What you need to do is go and see the nurseries that you potentially may choose for your child. That’s it really.

Go yourself. Talk to the practitioners. Get a feel of the ambience in the nursery. Observe how the children are cared for. Observe the vibe. Ask yourself if you can imagine your own child being there for the whole day, 5 days a week. And if the answer is yes, great! And if the answer is no, great! Onto the next one.

Be also laser sharp aware that nurseries and pre-schools have an incredibly high rate of staff turnover (says a lot in itself!) so you may love a certain practitioner and she may be gone the next month!

Ultimately, the ‘best’ nursery for our circumstances was the closest one to us. The ‘best’ nursery for us was the one that my son actually wanted to go to each day. The ‘best’ nursery for us was the one that took the best care of our son.

Choose a nursery that suits you and not a nursery that someone who doesn’t even know you or your child is ‘recommending’ to you.

And one final point. If you truly want your child to make accelerated progress in their learning then that is up to you and not a nursery or a pre-school.
