What should we be focusing on to support our child to be offered a place? (4+)

Another question that I receive daily from parents who are preparing their children for their 4+ assessment.

Parents rarely like my answer to their question.

Parents who ask this question are looking for one answer but I have hundreds of answers for them and typically most parents would find 100 answers overwhelming.

I would too.

Here is my answer that parents do not like one bit.

There is not one thing that you should be ‘focusing on’. What you should have been focussing on over the last 10-15 months was covering a broad and vast curriculum which covers all 7 areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage in depth.

You see it’s kind of like asking me, ‘What should I be focusing on if I want to lose weight?’

There isn’t just ONE THING that you should be focusing on if you want to lose weight. If you truly want to lose weight (and keep it off), you will be focusing on hundreds of things over the course of 2-3 years that will support you to lose the weight (and keep it off!). You do not just focus on one thing briefly and cross your fingers hoping that you will lose the weight that you hope to lose.

It’s kind of like you asking me, ‘What should I be focusing on if I want to get wealthy?’

There isn’t just ONE THING. You get my point.

As a company, when we support and prepare children to have tremendous success in their 4+ assessments it really isn’t our end goal. If they get in - that’s great. That is the cherry on top. Our end goal is always supporting children to become lovers of learning. Supporting children who have a passion for learning. Supporting children who are hungry to learn. Supporting children who ask for more and more and more. That is our end goal.

So if you have 4+ assessments coming up in the next 3-6 months, focus your energy on supporting your child to be strong and confident in all 7 areas of the early years curriculum and then depending on your choices go deeper. Support them to be at mastery level of even more complex curriculum. And if you don’t know, work only with teachers who do know. And who can support you every step of the way.
